چکیده

The rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases is important for the confirmation of diagnosis and therapeutic considerations. In some life-threatening instances like meningitis, an early diagnosis will facilitate appropriate intervention. Conventional methods like culture for diagnosis are considered standard and reliable but the handicap is the delay, usually around 48 hours, before confirmative results are obtained. Moreover, these methods are expensive and not all laboratories in developing countries are competent. The concept of rapid diagnosis is recent. A test to be called a rapid diagnostic method must fulfil two criteria. It must achieve diagnosis early in the course of illness and must be quick to perform, the resuits being available say, in few minutes to few hours. Rapid diagnostic methods inelude immunological and non-immunological techniques. The non-immunological techniques include among others gas liquid chromatography to detect microbial metabolites directly in body fluids and the use of complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (cDNA) probes for detecting micro-

Detection of type-specific antigens in the lungs of Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae-infected pigs by coagglutination test.

Specific diagnosis of Haemophilus pleuropneumoniae infection by the conventional culture and identification method usually requires 3 to 4 days. Since H. pleuropneumoniae may be disseminated from infected individuals during this period, this amount of time required for diagnosis may be too slow to aid in epidemic control. To obtain an earlier diagnosis, a coagglutination test was successfully u...

Rapid diagnosis of septic arthritis by coagglutination.

Pneumococcal capsular antigens were detected and serotyped by coagglutination in joint fluids and serum of a patient with septic arthritis within 1 h of obtaining the specimens. Pneumococcal antigens continued to be detected by coagglutination for 3 days, whereas cultures and Gram stains were negative after 1 day of antibiotic therapy.

RAPID IDENTIFICATION OF Vibrio cholera-01 BY COAGGLUTINATION TEST USING MONO-SPECIFIC ANTIBODY

Mono-specific antisera against Vibrio cholera Ogawa NIH-43 and Vibrio cholera Inaba 35-A3 were prepared from rabbit hyperimmune sera by absorbing against a heterologous strain. Using ammonium sulphate precipitation procedure, gamma globulins were purified and concentrated. To visualize antigen-antibody reaction, gamma globulins were conjugated to Staphylococcus aureus cowan-l (NCTC: 8325) ...

A preliminary study on the use of counterimmunoelectrophoresis and coagglutination methods in the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis.

The usefulness of counterimmunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) and coagglutination (COAG) methods in the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis was evaluated. Out of the 31 cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specimens which had a cell count of>5 x106wbc/l and were negative on gram stain and culture, pneumococcal antigens were detected in four specimens and Haemophilus influenzae type b antigen was detected in one spe...

Counterimmunoelectrophoresis for the detection of bacterial antigens in cerebrospinal fluid.

One hundred and seventeen specimens of cerebrospinal fluid from 94 patients were examined for the presence of pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae type b antigens using counterimmunoelectrophoresis and coagglutination tests. The coagglutination method using Phadebact reagents was as sensitive as counterimmunoelectrophoresis, but culture was a more sensitive diagnostic procedure than either t...
